I’ve been kinda lazy the past week and pasta is the easiest thing to make which is why I’ve been eating a lot of it. I did manage to find one simple recipe from the Ad Hoc cookbook that I could throw together with very mimimal effort and that’s Keller’s grilled asparagus with prosciutto, fried bread, poached eggs, and balsamic vinegar. Numnumnum.

To anyone looking for an everyday cookbook, I would recommend, The Art of Simple Food, by Alice Waters. In it, she provides recipes for very common, everyday type meals that are simple to prepare and incorporate fresh, healthy ingredients. Trust when I say that this cookbook will not be sitting on your coffee table only to be used to impress your friends when they come visit. (As much as I love David Chang’s Momofuku, a lot of his recipes require way too much time and prep work. I would have to devote an entire day to making some of his dishes i.e. ramen.) While none of the dishes in Simple Food are incredibly imaginative, they’re easy to make and very delicious.

Trussed and de-wishboned

In the most recent No Reservations, Anthony Bourdain and friends demonstrate how to prepare some very common and classic dishes such as spaghetti with red sauce, hamburger, and of course, whole roasted chicken a la Thomas Keller. I thought this would be the perfect opportunity for my first foray into Keller’s Ad Hoc at Home. Both recipes are pretty similar, although the version he made on TV was somewhat slimmed down. I’ve roasted whole chicken before but trussing the bird (which I never bothered to learn how to do) helped it brown consistently and removing the wishbone made serving the breast meat much easier. I think it came out pretty well.

Grizzly Bear “Two Weeks” x Black Sheep “The Choice is Yours”

Here’s a joint I mashed up using Grizzly Bear’s “Two Weeks” and Black Sheep’s “The Choice is Yours (This or That).” I’m a big fan of Golden Era hip hop and even though Black Sheep only had one big hit, they’re one of the first groups I think of when I think of that moment in time. I love the melody on Two Weeks but wanted to make it danceable, ergo the break from The Choice is Yours. Hopefully it makes you nod your head just a little. There’s an excellent Fred Falke remix floating around out there as well.

Akai LPD8 Midi Controller

Just got this nice little Akai controller for my birthday and sold my Korg. Been messing around with Ableton a little more so I thought this would be useful. For anyone out there looking for a synth, drum machine, or effects processor, I would NOT recommend the EMX. They tried to cram too much into one machine. Either go with software or purchase the stand alone machines dedicated to each of those functions. The EMX was decent as a drum machine, average as an effects processor, and pretty poor as a synth (no keys!)
